Welcome to unCommon Apps

Working with unCommon Apps ensures that teens have the skills and perspective necessary to succeed in high school, college, and beyond. We create products and curriculum geared toward enhancing academic mastery and make sure teenagers are clearly directed in the process of finding the right school, college, and career. We’re there to help them research, apply, and interview.

Understanding how students and teachers think is at the heart of our distinctive competence. Students who need to master skills in critical reading, writing, and research respond best to challenging assignments geared toward their areas of interest. At unCommon Apps, we take a special interest in each student. We also believe that not every student is aware of his or her passion; hopefully, we are there to help guide the student in that discovery.

Our founder, Nina Berler, advises parents, students, and educational publishers. Her one-on-one experiences with students continually spark ideas for content providers. Over the past four years, she has worked with three edtech companies. Prior to that, Nina frequently participated in holistic essay scoring for TOEFL and state assessments. During her corporate career, Nina was a director with KPMG, where she led the firm’s Executive Education business. She went on to teach language arts and math to numerous middle school and high school students before starting her college counseling practice.

Nina has an AB with Honors from Brown University, an MBA from the Stern School of Business, New York University, and a Certificate with Distinction in College Counseling from UCLA Extension. Her blog posts, lesson plans, and articles have been featured by college prep organizations and appeared in ReadWriteThink, SmartBlogs, and the Wall Street Journal Classroom Edition Teacher’s Guide.
