What if you could pay less for a bachelor’s degree that takes only three years to complete?

Study abroad has always been extremely appealing to students. Now more of my applicants are considering earning their degree from a university based outside the United States, particularly those in the United Kingdom.

Certainly, UK colleges evoke prestige (e.g., Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, St Andrews). The locations are stunning: London, Edinburgh, Bristol and Bath (among others). As you may know from these posts, I have enjoyed stopping by UK campuses over the past few years and finding out why they live up to the hype.

To learn more, I recently attended the UK Admissions Academy, a virtual conference hosted by Jackie Christopher, founder of the UK Study Expert. Over the course of two days, I listened to speakers from UK universities, a representative from application platform UCAS and a panel of current students and came away convinced that this option might be good for some of my current students.

Cost-Benefit Case Study

Your prospective applicant wants to major in psychology and prefers an urban setting. They could pursue a four-year bachelor's degree at any number of fine US universities. Alternatively, they could apply directly to a UK university, where they could potentially complete college in three years. Your student is considering Boston University and King's College London:

Boston University

Psychology

Bachelor of Arts (4 years)

As stated in the BU Hub requirements, the degree includes “Philosophical, Aesthetic, and Historical Interpretation; Scientific and Social Inquiry; Quantitative Reasoning; Diversity, Civic Engagement, and Global Citizenship.”

Annual Tuition: $69,900

Annual Fees (Estimated): $21,400

TOTAL: $91,300

King's College London

Psychology

Bachelor of Science in Psychology (3 years)*

The program, accredited by the British Psychological Society, features current research in psychiatry and psychology, a hospital partnership and a personal tutor. There's an option of spending the third year in industry.

*Assumes foundational criteria met

Tuition: $44,000

Annual Fees (Estimated): $27,000

TOTAL: $71,000

Your student is admitted to both institutions.

Assuming you pay the full sticker price for college, you could save $20,300 per year by opting for the King's College experience, not to mention an additional $91,300 for the extra year at BU! That’s a total of savings of $152,200!
